Sitemaps are mainly of two types, namely, (1) the XML sitemap and (2) the HTML sitemap. Both kinds of sitemaps are important but there exists a difference in accessibility, crawling, and indexing.

XML Sitemap: XML Sitemap is made for search engines. Crawlers and search engine bots can access, crawl, read, and index such a sitemap. It contains important information including metadata on each URL found within the website. HTML Sitemap is enabled for human readers, not for search engine crawlers and it does not get updated on auto-pilot. How to Create a Sitemap?

Your site has contained a lot of content that you want to submit to Google. You need a sitemap containing the important pages of your website. Now, you can create a sitemap using an SEO plugin like Rank Math. Rank Math can create a sitemap for your website. On the WordPress site, this is a great plugin to manage search engine optimization. For each CMS, there are tools to generate a sitemap. Install the plugin and activate it. Once you have installed and activated Rank Math, you need to set up it to let it work properly.

Once the plugin is installed and activated, you can create a sitemap by checking the sitemap enabling button under ‘Sitemaps’ from the Wizard setup. You can enable and disable the button for sitemap generation.

Upon the activation of the plugin, it creates an XML Sitemap by default.

Want to submit your sitemap to Google? If so, you can do this via Google Search Console(GSC). Sign in to your Google account if you have an existing account or you can create a new account and sign in.

So, go through the following steps to submit the sitemap to Google:

  1. Sign in to Google Search Console(GSC).
  2. Locate your site in the left vertical menus. You can see your site here if you have already completed site ownership verification. You need to verify site ownership if you have not done this before, as it is a must-have to use GSC.
  3. Scroll down along the scroll bar located at the right of the GSC menu bar.
  4. Locate the “Index” menu and open it to access the submenus.
  5. Locate the “Sitemaps” submenu under the Index menu.
  6. Click on “Sitemaps” and it takes you to the page specified for sitemap submission.
  7. Add the sitemap in the field specified for the sitemap URL.
  8. Once the sitemap URL is added therein, click on submit

Click on your property and you can see the following menus:

  • URL Inspection
  • Index ⏩
    • Coverage
    • Sitemaps
    • Removals

Click on “Index” and it will open the submenus. Locate the “Sitemaps” and click on it. It takes you to the sitemaps page where you can add your website’s sitemaps’ URL and submit.
